The GIC currently has 120 schools participating from the above counties. The meeting also discussed different ways of sensitizing the students and the community on the benefits of environmental conservation.

“The GIC is a noble idea that will not only help KenGen meet its commitment in environmental management at the County, but also raise the company’s profile through improving the schools’ and communities’ environment and livelihoods”, said Mike Chege, Environmental Officer, Olkaria.
KenGen is expanding its operations at Olkaria with the planned construction of the 140MW Olkaria V Geothermal Power Plant to start before the end of the year.
“Trees are the lungs of our environment, and by empowering young students through such programs like the GIC, we are securing our natural resources,” added Douglas Gichangi.
Plans to set up the various mechanisms of running the GIC afforestation challenge are underway, with the project implementation expected to kick off during the next short rains later in the year.
