KenGen Foundation Launches 120 Million Ten-year Schools Greening Project
“The expansion project is funded by the partners at a cost of Ksh 120 million and is an upscale of the successful phase I pilot project that initially involved 81 schools within the counties of Embu and Machakos. We thank our partners in joining us in this great project”, he added.
The GIC expansion project is in line with Kenya’s 2030 ‘Greening Kenya’ flagship programme
that assists schools in water catchment areas with tree planting activities. The project is designed as a challenge to participating schools, mainly due to the dry weather conditions in the areas. Prizes are awarded based on the highest survival rate of seedlings and use of innovation in growing the trees.
“The celebration of positive environmental actions renews our commitment and goodwill as KenGen towards sound environmental management at all levels. To date, it is reported that together with like-minded partners we have managed to plant millions of trees in all our installations across the country’, said Engineer Solomon Kariuki who was representing KenGen’s CEO Albert Mugo.
“The slogan formulated as a rallying call for action dubbed; “Panda miti, hifadhi mazingira” could not have come at a better time”, he added.
Present at the launch was Better Globe’s Managing Director Jean-Paul Deprins who stated that we can reduce poverty through growing trees.
