“Givers” Boost KenGen Education Scholarships
“This is a great boost from the givers coming soon after celebrating ten years of the scholarship program, ’says KenGen Foundation Managing Trustee Mike Njeru, adding that the sup-port for the Giver Initiative from the staff has been commendable. He noted that at the end of January 2016, some 566 employees had subscribed to the initiative.
The Employee Giver Initiative Fund was established in May 2015 and was soon rolled out to all the areas of operation. It is fully funded by KenGen employees who give their contributions through the check-off system. The eight additional scholarships werre distributed to all areas and subjected to the company’s selection process conducted by the area CSR committees. School boards selected the two Bamburi Cement scholarships.
Mr. Njeru noted that the Foundation had introduced a new and open system of awarding the scholarships to ensure they benefit the most deserving cases. The students are selected from the list of applicants by the liaison officers in collaboration with area District Education Officers and community stakeholder committees. The candidates are then interviewed by the area CSR Committee before the names are forwarded to the Foundation whose role is to process the fees and monitor the students’ performance throughout the scholarship period.
Support to education both in scholarships and infrastructure is one of the Foundation’s main areas of focus. Kudos to the KenGen GIVERS for this great boost.
