Giver Newsletter #2 April 2016
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the second issue of the Giver Newsletter. As indicated when we launched the newsletter, this issue and all subsequent issues will be delivered to you via email.
In the first quarter of the year, we engaged in a number of activities centered on our focus areas of Environment, Education and Water and Sanitation.
All plans to kick off the expanded Green Initiative Challenge under the banner of GIC Phase 2 before the long rains set were completed on time. The seedlings were distributed to most schools by end of March. This program was officially launched in November last year, but the kick off for planting was set for the long rains season.
Elsewhere, it was pay time for the winners of GIC pilot program, which concluded at the launch of GIC Phase 2. The St. Martin Kaewa Secondary School enjoyed the coveted overall prize of a fully paid 3-day trip to Mombasa, while the second runners up, Mwea Primary school took off for a 2-day trip to Olkaria which included memorable moments at the Olkaria Spa and Hell Gate National Park.
DEB Makutano enjoyed a one-day excursion at Gitaru power station, which culminated with lunch, and a swim at Matendeni Senior Staff Club. Over and above the trips, the three schools were awarded water tanks, cash prizes and certificates.
In February, we awarded secondary school scholarships to 31 high school beneficiaries. This included 10 more scholarships than in previous years, thanks to KenGen Givers and our partner, Bamburi Cement Ltd.
While on a look and learn trip, the Foundation team gained valuable knowledge on dry land farming techniques, and the construction of sustainable water pans and sand dams. The lessons learned will be reflected in subsequent water and sanitation projects in the coming years.
I am also proud to announce that the Giver Initiative has grown in numbers, and would like to take this opportunity to thank, on behalf of the team, all those who share our vision, and have encouraged and lend us support along the way.
