Foundation Signs Its First World Bank Grant
The construction of the Mirira footpath at the Tana power station’s inlet is expected to boost the area’s income generation through the ease of movement between the six villages of Kairo, Gakindu, Matithi, Kayuyu and Kaingojo and the three local markets at Makutano Town. Currently, the existing path is steep, rocky, and dangerous and poses great danger for the sick, old and disabled. It is also inaccessible during rains.
The Community Development Carbon Fund grant is as a result of carbon credits earned from the redevelopment of Tana Hydropower Station under the Clean Energy Development Mechanism. It is through the plant’s recent redevelopment that additional renewable energy is annually generated, which results in the reduction in the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gases [GHG] emissions.
The world Bank choose the Foundation to administer the use of these additional Funds.
The two projects, scheduled to begin in August, will be implemented in collaboration with KenGen Foundation, KenGen’s CDM and Environment Department, Eastern Hydros Staff and the community.
