Forever Grateful! How Ken Mwangi made the KenGen Scholarship His Stepping Stone.

“My family, which consisted of my grandfather, grandmother, my mum and aunts, used to live in the shacks of Gitambaya until 2004, when we could not manage the life in Ruiru anymore and moved to our rural area in Magogoni, Ngoliba Location in Thika East.

Ken Mwangi (rt.) during his days at Ngoliba Secondary School

Affording the primary school fees by my grandmother was an uphill task and it was even more so for my secondary school, but things were to change for the better sooner rather than later. Though I had done well in my KCSE, my dream of attaining higher education was as distant as before. My family had no money to take me to the university. I was left wondering: what next?

And this one dayI got a call from my principal in Ngoliba Secondary School, Mrs Jane Mwangi, who informed me that I had been awarded a KenGen Foundation Education Scholarship to pursue my undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi. This was after a rigorous assessment of my qualifications both academically, and also in consideration of my family’s background.

I cannot amply describe the joy that I felt after learning this great news! Till this day I remember that I rushed to school to get the news from the horse’s mouth. God had indeed answered my prayers.

Much thanks go to KenGen Foundation for giving me a chance in life”.
