Eye Opener Trip For KenGen Foundation and Eastern Hydros Staff

KenGen was one of the initial contributors to CIM in 2009. Since then thousands of households now boast of having a sustainable water source that feed their crops year round. This has given them food security and improved their financial resources.

While on a walk around his model farm, the Bishop demonstrated several ingenious dry land farming techniques such as moist gardens, Zai Pits, maize nurseries, and zero tillage agriculture. He also explained the basic principal of market-led agriculture through the setting up of simple agricultural eco-systems, and sustainably rearing several different livestock such as rabbits, geese, chicken and fish, while reaping maximum benefits at very low capital costs.

A visit to nearby farms confirmed that indeed, the Yatta community’s fortunes have changed for the better.

Peter Mutiso, a local farmer, proudly showed off his achievements to the KenGen team. Ever since he set up his family dam five years ago, he’s been able to have bountiful crop through out the year. His fields have maize crop, mangoes, tomatoes, onions and other market vegetables. He also keeps 2 high-grade milk cows – a rare sight in the semi arid place to complement his crop income. He has already dug a second dam and more than doubled his water source to take care of his 7 acres of land, which is 100 per cent, utilized.
