Thua Primary School, Kitui County, and Kwawanzil Secondary School, Machakos County, are set to benefit from the construction of a chain link fence and a new classroom respectively courtesy of the Schools Green Initiative Challenge afforestation project.

During the projects handover meeting with the contractors, KenGen’s representative Timothy Mwilali and KenGen Foundation Communication Officer Ernest Nyamasyo lead the team on a tour of both sites, while confirming the work plans, mobilization requirements and stakeholder involvement in the construction works.

The Schools’ Green Initiative Challenge (GIC) is a KenGen Foundation program implemented in partnership with Better Globe Forestry and other corporate partners that is designed to encourage and enable schools to participate in environmental activities.

Thua Primary School managed to beat 119 schools from the semi-arid counties of Kitui, Embu and Machakos to emerge the winner in Phase II of the tree growing competition. Kwawanzilu Secondary School took second place in Phase III of the GIC.

A chain link fence for Thua Primary School will help secure the learners environment while a new classroom for Kwawanzilu Secondary School will ease overcrowding especially during the COVID pandemic.

The schools afforestation project is designed as a challenge to participating schools, mainly due to the dry weather conditions in the areas.

The construction works are part of the awards to top performing schools based on the highest survival rate of seedlings and use of innovation in growing the trees. The projected timeline for the construction works is estimated to be five weeks.
