A colourful launch of the Green Initiative Challenge expansion project took place at Kalatine Secondary School in Kitui on Tuesday 17 November. Under the project, 500 acres of arid and semi-arid land are set to go green in the ambitious ten-year schools afforestation project to be implemented by the KenGen Foundation in partnership with Better Globe Forestry and Bamburi Cement limited,
The Green Initiative Challenge expansion project will involve over 900 schools in growing woodlots within their compounds with the drought resistant Muveshi and Mukau tree species. The early years of the woodlots will take in Pawpaw and Passion fruit trees.
“We are really excited about the launch of the Green Initiative Challenge (GIC) phase II schools afforestation project”, said Mike Njeru, the KenGen Foundation Managing Trustee.
